10 Weird/Random Things About Me
1. I am afraid of choking on things.
My mother will attest to this fact. Since I was small she has been trying to get me to swallow my vitamins. Nope, can't do it. (Still). The only pills I have been able to swallow are those little Tylenol 3s they give you after having a baby. For obvious reasons. When I was about 9 years old I had a horrible, money-wasting habit of taking the vitamins my dear mother so lovingly gave me and storing them in a safe I had in my room, so as not to eat them. The safe was a good 15 cm square (why did I have a safe in my room? who knows?), and I filled it completely. Several years later it was found by my (less than amused) parents!
2. Nu and I were engaged on a boat.
Yep, it was a very romantic harbour cruise in Vancouver, and old paddle-wheeler to be exact. August of 2001. It was the last thing on my mind because we'd run into several frustrations on the way to finally starting our cruise, several of which included being lost, hungry and angry, and Nu was in a terribly grumpy mood at the outset of the ride. Later he told me it was all an act! (ok, not the lost or hungry parts) He popped the question when we were in view of the giant golf ball also known as the Science Center...the ring was in his sock (!) and a long 'dragonboat' canoe of people got to witness it, congratulating as they passed.
3. I do not have a cell phone.
I stand with the few North Americans left who do not have one of those irritating little devices. To be honest, Nu has a work cell that has come in handy quite a bit, and if he didn't have it, we probably would have gotten one by now. Not that I like them. I just wish the city hadn't taken away all the pay phones...wasn't that a bit presumptious on their part?
4. Motherhood has made me a singer.
I mouthed my way through every choir during my school/church years growing up. (shhhh...don't tell anyone) I never thought I could sing at all. Now you will find me singing around the house, fun songs with my toddlers, and lullabies to my babies as they go to sleep. Who knew?
5. I can't stand to have hot feet.
Horrible. Absolutely intolerable. I never wear socks to bed.
6. I would like to travel to Europe.
I am very interested in travelling to the countries where my ancestors lived; England, Norway, Holland. When we were in high school, Preet and I decided we wanted to go to Italy for our honeymoons (if possible, simultaneously, because, of course, we would get married within several months of each other). She went to Italy for her honeymoon several years ago. Nu and I went to Vernon and Enderby. Someday....
7. I do NOT like dogs (sorry to copy Heidi).
I very much prefer cats. Nothing against the dog people, but frankly, I just can't take the barking. Cats are fabulously QUIET. And that is very important to me.
8. I do not like sad movies/books/songs.
Some people love them, I know. But I can't endure them. Old Yeller, no thank you. If I hear the song 'Christmas Shoes' I will turn off the radio instantly.
9. I love plants.
This has developed over the years. I want to know the real scientific names. And then I want to carefully analyze, create a planting scheme, and try growing them. Then analyze again, move them around, and plant again. I'm a geek, I know.
10. My name is Grace.
Well, not really. But I have required a lot of grace from God in my life. It really is true that when we are faithless, He is still faithful. In 11th grade, I gave my life to Christ at the orientation to a missions trip to L.A. I would have definitely called myself a Christian before that, but it was there that all the things I knew and believed in my head became REAL and MINE. At that orientation, a woman stopped me in the parking lot and said that my name should be 'Grace.' Even now I need grace desperately of course, but in the few years after that experience, I needed overdoses of grace in my life, due to my rebellious heart. What that woman said has always stuck with me. My oldest daughter's middle name is Grace, as a remembrance of God's faithfulness to me. It was going to be her first name, but the Samoan word for Grace is about a mile long and impossible to pronounce!
Ok, that was 10 because I wrote this before I re-read the rules, and then I didn't want to waste the thinking I had done!
