On balance...

I'm about to get all theological on you...but don't stop reading!

Thanks to my lovely sister for directing me to this link...a good read by Mark Driscoll, regarding, you know, theological stuff. (It's interesting, really, I promise)
Here it is:

And one good point for those of you who are not motivated to read the entire article:

"Christianity is supposed to be a two-handed religion. In the closed hand of unchanging certainty are to be such things as a high view of the Bible and literalism, commitment to the Trinity, belief in original sin, salvation by grace through faith in Jesus alone, creation by God, literal hermeneutic, heaven and hell, clear gender roles, and loving humility. In the open hand of less certainty are to be issues that are of a secondary nature that we can disagree and debate over without dividing. They would include such things as age of the earth, perspectives on predestination and election, view of the rapture, worship styles, church government forms, and mode of baptism. These secondary matters are not unimportant, but simply less important than the primary matters that belong in the closed hand of certainty. "

Oh sick, I did it again! I lost my comment!
AAAS I was saying...I tend to agree with taht statement...there are two parts, the essentials and the non-essentials. The first category are those things that our salvation hinges on. Only I would tend to put the 'young earth' view in the closed hand as it goes 'hand in hand' with creation. As we are learning in homeschool, the 'young earth' view is essential to a Christian world view, as opposed to the evolutionist/atheistic view of an old earth. It is because of the introduction of the old earth view into our education system and text books that the whole culture has gone to pot.
Oh, I said it better the first time. Urrrggghhh!!!!!!

Oh difficult one,
Yay! Discussion!
I see what you mean re. the rapture and the young earth view, however, the way I understand his statement is that whilst we should hold these things in a closed hand--not being open minded about them, but remaining faithful to the Bible--we should just not make them the test of whether someone is a believer or not...recognize that there may be people in heaven with us who believed wrongly about one thing or another in this area? This wouldn't be true of something like, the atonement of Jesus for our sin, or the lordship of Him in our lives, right? But believing in a young earth may not be a requisite for getting into heaven? What do you think?

yes. aggreed.

i believe we have many false beliefs about things, many. but i do not believe that my immature mind believing that the rapture is happening pre, post, or blabla will cause me to be condemned to the eternal punishment. you know? if i fear God, believe what He says, and have a misconception of something that doesn't seem clear in the bible, i don't think that is the eternal sin.
right?
